Cyanotoxins are harmful substances produced by certain types of algae, commonly known as blue-green algae, that can pose a serious threat to your dog’s health. Recognize the risk

Understanding the risk associated with cyanotoxins is the first step in safeguarding your dog. Cyanotoxins come from cyanobacteria, which thrive in warm freshwater environments, such as lakes, ponds, and stagnant water bodies. They can create toxic blooms, particularly during hot weather or when water is rich in nutrients. Recognize the signs of potential cyanobacteria presence, such as visible algae blooms, scum on the water’s surface, or a foul smell.

The two serious types of cyanotoxins are anatoxin and microcystin. These toxins can cause neurologic injury or liver damage. Liver failure, shock, and respiratory arrest caused by these cyanotoxins can even lead to death.

Avoid exposure to algal blooms

Prevention is key to protecting your dog from cyanotoxins. Avoid areas with visible algal blooms or signs of contaminated water. Always choose clean and well-maintained bodies of water for your dog’s swimming adventures. Be cautious when visiting unfamiliar water sources, as cyanobacterial blooms can occur unexpectedly.

Algal blooms can occur in stagnant water, particularly during periods of warm weather or when there has been a prolonged absence of rain. These blooms can manifest as either blue-green or red-brown colored accumulations, forming mats, foam, or scum on the water’s surface. Additionally, the water itself may emit an odor reminiscent of decaying plant matter.

Provide ample fresh drinking water

Ensure that your dog has access to clean and fresh drinking water during outdoor activities. Bring a sufficient supply of water from home to avoid any reliance on potentially contaminated water sources. Prevent your dog from drinking water from lakes, ponds, or puddles to minimize the risk of cyanotoxin ingestion.

Supervise and control water access

Keep a close eye on your dog while they are near water. Dogs are naturally curious and may be tempted to explore or drink from unknown sources. Maintain control by using a leash or providing a designated play area away from the water’s edge.
